What to do about Downloads setup

Downloads

Note: All the downloads you do, go to the downloads folder you specify, the default is usually your desktop. If it is the desktop, this can make your startup process very long.

- Rather have your Downloads folder in your ‘My Documents’ folder, as this means it will get backed up, if and when you do backups. If you have to restore, you will know which applications you have downloaded and can then re-install them, otherwise, you may forget and not have the same functionality as before.

You may want to check your Downloads folder periodically and move the application files to another folder called Application downloads or Program downloads so that in the event of a system crash, you know what to reload.
Remember to do backups regularly so that you do not lose your data.

Now is the time to back up if you haven’t already. Do a backup at the very least once a month. If you are doing a lot of creative work, weekly is better. If you are going to lose valuable work and time, daily is the best option. Make it an automatic process, when it is most convenient for you. How to remove Temporary Internet files

If you want to delete only your Temporary Internet Files,
you can do the following:

When you are in your browser (Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.)
Select [Tools] in your toolbar, the dropdown will have different options; the ones you will be interested in are the following:

Downloads ***check Downloads page before you delete this***
Clear recent History and
Options

Note: There are different ways to get to these options. The one is using the mouse to point and click on the tabs to select the option you want, or you can use shortcuts by using the Ctrl, Shift and Alt keys.

Using the {Alt} tab: Hold the alt tab down. To get Tools type T, to get Downloads type D, while holding the {Alt} key down. Try this and see what happens. That is why the letters are underlined. To make it obvious.

Using {Ctrl} and {Shift} keys: In your Browser (before selecting T for Tools)
To get the same as the above, press {Ctrl} and type J at the same time – this will give you the downloads screen.

Before you clear your space, make sure you don’t need any of the files you downloaded. Check it out here [Tools] Download or press {Ctrl J} simultaneously.

To remove the unwanted files:
{Ctrl Shift Delete} at the same time will take you to the delete history screen
{Alt} T for Tools, H for delete History – this will take you to the tools menu then the delete history menu.

Note: All the downloads you do, go to the downloads folder you specify, the default is usually your desktop. If it is the desktop, this can make your startup process very long.
- Rather have your downloads folder in your ‘My Documents’ folder, as this means it will get backed up, if and when you do backups. How to clear some space on your Personal Computer PC

How to make space on your computer, PC

Most of us (me included) forget to clear our temp files folder, recycle bin and temporary Internet files. You could free up quite a bit of space when you do this; all downloaded files, programs, cookies, temporary internet storage files, and other unnecessary clutter.  If you are afraid of deleting something that may be important, delete only your Temporary Internet Files for now, then get someone to help you who knows about these things.  You can contact us if you wish.

First check how much space you will free up and whether it is worth doing this, by following the next steps:
Open Windows Explorer
In My Computer  get your C:-drive left click on that
This opens a menu
Click on Properties
This will show you how much disk space you are using and how much free space you have.
Left click the [Disk cleanup] button
Note: This may take a few minutes as it has to go through the whole C: drive on your computer to check how much space can be freed.
It will come back with some options ticked and how much space each of these will free up.
 Downloaded programs nKb
 Temporary Internet Files nMb
 Recycle Bin nGb
 Temporary Files, etc nKb

....where n is a number in the above example

Gb means Gigabytes and is a lot of space
Mb is Megabytes and is a bit of space
Kb is Kilobytes and isn’t much
100 Kb = 1 Mb
100 Mb = 1 Gb

Click on the OK button and it will delete these files.
Check the percentage space you now have free.
Click OK again to remove the menu box

Now is the time to back up if you haven’t already. Do a backup at the very least once a month. If you are doing a lot of creative work, weekly is better. If you are going to lose valuable work and time, daily is the best option. Make it an automatic process, when it is most convenient for you. If you wish to know what the Why its necessary to back up check it out by clicking on the underlined bits which will take you to the back-up page or have a look at  What happens if you don't do backups regularly
